Harold Dougal is remembered as one of Idaho’s pioneering backcountry pilots, a man whose life was defined by his passion for aviation and exploration. Born in 1927, Dougal developed a fascination with airplanes from a young age and pursued his dream of flying with relentless determination.
After receiving flight training following World War II, he embarked on a career that would span more than 45 years. During that time, Dougal flew numerous aircraft types while working for aviation companies, mining operations, and transportation services throughout the mountainous regions of Idaho and neighboring states.
His flying took him across remote valleys, rugged mountain ranges, and isolated airstrips where few pilots dared to operate. These experiences formed the foundation of his memoir, where he documents not only the excitement of aviation but also the discipline, courage, and responsibility required to fly in such extreme environments.
